Dick Gleason of Gleason Media Services which includes Lewiston-Auburn's own WEZR 1240 spoke today on "The Challenge of Being Informed". It was a lively presentation which did provoke some stimulating and thought provoking questions at the end.

Here are some excerpts from Dick's Presentation.

  • Gathering information is a huge burden that we all bear if we weigh the thoughts of Thomas Jefferson who is known for saying: "Whenever the people are well-informed, they can be trusted with their own government; whenever things get so far wrong as to attract their notice, they may be relied on to set them to rights."  I fear that if Jefferson were around today, he would be disappointed.
  • Is it possible that the public is acting less interested, engaged and concerned about being informed about the activities of their government than ever before?
  • My feeling is that more people should be phoning and writing to their representatives at all levels.  It has far more effect than writing letters to the editor.

In addition to the presentation there were several other anouncements made today. The allocations sub committee of Community Service met after the meeting to review many donation requests. The Public Service sub committee will be meeting after next weeks club meeting and Dave thanked Johanna for bringing in Diapers for Trinity Jubilee. The FUNdraising sub committee will be meeting Thursday July 30th from 5:30-6:30 at the Mechanics Savings Bank Operations Center at 30 Belgrade Ave Suite D. Mona says ALL are welcome. The Membership Committee met after the meeting as well. Hope to see you all next week when Rick Whiting from the Auburn Housing Authority will present. He will be speaking about the Vincent Block project that former Club Member Tom Spugnardi is the Architect on.
